Altered physiology of gastrointestinal vagal afferents following neurotrauma

چکیده

The adaptability of the central nervous system has been revealed in several model systems. Of particular interest to system-injured individuals is ability for neural components be modified regain function. In both types neurotrauma, traumatic brain injury and spinal cord injury, primary parasympathetic control gastrointestinal tract, vagus nerve, remains anatomically intact. However, with or are highly susceptible dysfunctions. Such dysfunctions attribute higher morbidity mortality following injury. While vagal efferent output capable eliciting motor responses evidence suggests impairment afferents. Since sensory input drives output, this review will discuss normal altered anatomy physiology afferents better understand contributions afferent plasticity neurotrauma.

Ghrelin selectively reduces mechanosensitivity of upper gastrointestinal vagal afferents.

Ghrelin is a peptide released from gastric endocrine cells that has an orexigenic effect via a vagal pathway. Here we determine the effect of ghrelin on mechanosensitivity of upper-intestinal vagal afferent fibers in ferret and mouse. The responses of gastroesophageal vagal afferents to graded mechanical stimulation were determined in vitro before and during application of ghrelin to their peri...

Activation of Cardiac Vagal Afferents

Myocardial ischemia and reperfusion can evoke excitation of cardiac vagal nerve endings and activation of a cardiogenic depressor reflex (Bezold-Jarisch effect). We postulate that oxygen-derived free radicals, which are known to be produced during prolonged ischemia and reperfusion, contribute to this afferent excitation. We recorded activity from 47 chemosensitive vagal afferent fibers in 31 r...

Early postnatal overnutrition: potential roles of gastrointestinal vagal afferents and brain-derived neurotrophic factor.

Abnormal perinatal nutrition (APN) results in a predisposition to develop obesity and the metabolic syndrome and thus may contribute to the prevalence of these disorders. Obesity, including that which develops in organisms exposed to APN, has been associated with increased meal size. Vagal afferents of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract contribute to regulation of meal size by transmitting satiati...

Altered Control of Hindlimb Vascular Resistance by Vagal Afferents in Spontaneously Hypertensive Rats

The aim of this study was to examine whether control of vascular resistance by vagal afferents is altered in the early as well as late stage of hypertension. We examined the effects of vagotomy on hindlimb vascular resistance as well as on arterial baroreflex control of hindlimb vascular resistance in spontaneously hypertensive rats and Wistar-Kyoto rats, 12 and 35 weeks old. Vagotomy in rats w...

Co-sensitivity of vagal mucosal afferents to

A complex sensitivity of afferent nerves in the mesentery of the rat jejunum to systemic administration of histamine has recently been demonstrated. In the present study, we aimed to characterize subpopulations of mesenteric afferents that mediate this afferent nerve response. Multi-unit afferent discharge was recorded from mesenteric nerves supplying the proximal jejunum in anesthetized rats. ...
